GOTV in FL
Spent the day calling and sign waving in Ormond Beach, FL in Volusia county home of the 2000 recount.  Thumbs up and 4 fingers up were running 10 to one over Kerry thumbs down(usually much worse).  Bush supporters very up, very engergized.  Stready stream into the headquaters all afternoon.  I was amazed at the ages.  At least half of the BC04 supporters were under 30.

In the Desert
I was reading about the Israelites and the Tent of Meeting God instructed them to make as a place of worship.  It struck me that out in the middle of the desert God called them to donate gold, silver, bronze, cloth, furs, skins and wood for the project.  One of the required items was porpoise skins. Was He planning ahead for that one? God did not demand the items.  Instead, through Moses He said Take from among you a contribution to the LORD; whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as the LORD'S contribution (Exodus 35:5).  As the work began, the people kept bringing stuff, so much in fact the workers asked Moses to tell them to stop.

Have the workers for the Lord (Mercy Ministries, Rescue Mission, CareNet, Salvation Army, Home Mission Board, Foreign Mission Board, Samaritan's Purse, Wycliffe, Campus Crusade.....) told you they have enough stuff and don't bring anymore?

Maybe our hearts aren't willing enough.

Can your "Child" over come the world?
We struggle in life to "grow up" and leave the childish ways behind.  We want to be older, stronger, part of the crowd.  We learn to tell little white lies to keep the peace and avoid hassles.  We develop habits to avoid making decisions.  We develop stereotypes to make sure the world makes sense.  And we call it maturity.  Oswald Chambers would rather we behave as "childlike people who were foolish enough to trust God's wisdom and the supernatural equipment of God."  He's ready, are you?

Who's your Daddy?
Who takes care of you when you are depressed or sick?  Who played ball with you as a kid and tied your shoes?  Who was the strongest, smartest, fastest, biggest person you knew when you were 4 years old?  Your daddy.

It is no wonder many who attack God do it by demeaning fathers.  It is the special relationship of a father to a son that God uses in his word to try and describe for us the boundless love and relationship He has for us.  As good as your daddy was when you were 4 years old, your heavenly Father is a billion times better.

Stop fighting with Him to have your own way.  Put a smile on your face and open your arms wide and run, run as fast as you can into His arms.  It is worth the surrender.

Are You Up For The Lows?
Did you have your game face on this morning?  Were you prepared for that special meeting?  It is amazing how we can work ourselves up to the toughest challenges we face.  With sheer grit and determination we will ourselves through the toughest battles to victory.  We savor the moment.  We recall the glory.  And afterward, we fall apart over the day to day trivia  Funny isn't it?  Marriages rarely fail over big things; it is almost always the little ones that bring it crashing down.  Why?  Because only God is strong enough to win the constant battles of the small wars we fight every moment of every day.  Are you up to trusting God to help you deal with the lows?

What does oil have to do with it?
A couple of posts back I spent a lot of time on the global oil situation. What does that have to do with the Ten Commandments?  A lot actually.  The oil situation is a mirror of the world at large.  The underlying situation is a fact, but market perception is the story of the day.  Our world is the same way.  God put certain truths in place when He created earth.  They are facts and have not changed.  It is our perception of them and Him that has changed.  The story today for many people is that all religions are equal and mostly bad for an elightened secular society.  Speculation on a future oil price does not change the underlying facts of the global situation.  Neither will speculation that God is dead and when society is sufficently enlightened, the world will be a better place.

If God is who He says He is, then speculating against Him is a very unwise position.

Why Bush?
So why should you vote for Bush?  Let's examine the scripture for an answer.  Romans 13:1 states For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore, in the U.S., God has granted that authority to "We the people..." (see earlier post on Declaration of Independence).

Since we have a choice, we should choose the person who most closely matches scriptural teaching for behavior..

Bush recognizes the source of his authority as the people of the U.S., but ultimately God.   By me kings reign, and rulers make just decrees (Proverbs 8:15).

Jesus says in John 15:12 This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.  Please see the "Ashley's Story" ad here for confirmation that Bush loves another.
Bush will do the right thing, even when many disagree. John 7:24 - Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.

Bush is who you think he is, 24 X 7, 365.  Luke 6:44 - for each tree is known by its own fruit.

There are many more examples.  I encourage you to look some up for yourself.  Perhaps the most telling reason is Proverbs 29:2:

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.

Oil.. A Bubble Waiting to Burst?

With news of oil reaching record highs daily, many people are wondering will it ever come down again.  The basic economics of oil are driven by supply and demand and for the past couple of years a doubling effect has been in action.  As demand rose, driven by China and India's economic growth, supply was being constricted by the war in Iraq, instability in Venezuela, regulatory issues in Russia and the mothballing of wells with high costs of operation by oil companies.  The combined effect was a steady rise in crude oil prices.

Since most crude oil is traded on a futures basis, that is lock price now and get delivery later (much like locking in a mortgage rate), buyers and sellers factor into the price an expectation of the future.  Lately that expectation is for some form of disruption in delivery due to war or civil unrest and is frequently called a “war premium.”  The basic supply and demand price is commonly referred to as the fundamental price.  In this CNNMoney article Mark Gongloff cites Lawrence Goldstein, president of the Petroleum Industry Research Foundation, an industry research firm as saying

"Fundamentals would suggest prices in the low-to-mid-30s.”

Based on that analysis, the current war premium is approximately $20 a barrel or 57% of the fundamental price.  At that level, it begins to look less like a premium and more like speculation.

When Mr. Gongloff wrote his article in August, 2004, global inventories were dangerously low and all indications were supply was not likely to change much.  That does not appear to be true any longer.  This article in the Wall Street Journal Indicates major oil companies are bringing online mothballed wells as fast as possible.  And this article indicates a rapid rise in global inventories.  (It also discounts that the increase will lower prices, but I believe it is because of the focus on supply.) The combination of these events has changed the equation and will put downward pressure on prices if they continue.

Demand, the other side of the equation, is being driven by China and India.  However, the bloom appears to be fading as reported here and here.  Expect this to continue.  China is restricted by lack of raw materials, rising labor costs, and a general flattening of the growth curve because all the good facilities are utilized and adding new ones is proving much more difficult than expected.  For India, it is much the same.  Exports slow as disposable income in other countries moves from Chinese and Indian imports to energy.   Longer term demand is also at risk. According to this article, hybrid cars are selling much better than anticipated.

If buyers demand hybrid technology at the same pace they did when air bags and anti-lock brakes were first introduced, cars equipped with hybrid engines could make up 20% of the overall car market by 2010 and 80% by 2015.

The study said oil refiners could face a significant drop in demand for gas, and should plan for a potential downturn. Automakers as well should start planning for a changing marketplace.

Based on the above analysis, I expect oil to fall.  The rate it falls will depend on the market herd that is speculating on higher prices.  If speculators start exiting now in a slow and controlled manner the drop will not be precipitous.  If they stay in and continue to drive up the price to $60 a barrel and no major changes occur, the drop will be sudden and far.  As they are forced to cover their bets, the sell stampede will accelerate with prices falling into the high teens.

God's Silence
Many times when people pray they are greeted with God's silence and rightly perceive the answer is "No."  Usually it is because the motive for asking is wrong or what they request is not godly.  Like asking the teller at the bank for an extra $100,000 cash back.  But as Oswald Chambers points out there is another type of silence.  The silence of deep intimacy.  Similar to grandpa and grandma after 50 years of marriage.  A question asked, then silence.  Confident silence. The answer is not important.  Bothering to ask is.  Turn off the world for few minutes, be still and ask for what God puts in your heart during the stillness. The asking will change you.  And that is the answer.

God Is In Control...
...But I have to keep pedaling. Living a Godly life is often equated with riding a bicycle built for two.  You start off in front and choose the path, while God rides along providing the energy.  At some point you realize God knows much more about bike riding and shortcuts than you ever will.  Most people swap places with God at this point and take the back seat, confident that God is in control.  As we give up the role of controlling where we are going, we must remember that while God was on the back seat He never stopped pedaling.  Sadly, some 4 million Christians stopped pedaling in the last presidental election. Don't make the same mistake this year.  Remember God is in control, but YOU have to keep pedaling.

No Mess, No Progress
Many are attacking Bush and the coalition on the mess they have created in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Many are saying we should have left them alone.  Solomon wrote "Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; But much increase comes by the strength of an ox." (Proverbs 14:4)  I think the 10 million Afghani's who voted Monday and the Iraqi's who will vote in January believe their increase is worth the mess.

Undecided?
Are you indecisive? Do you study and examine the situation from all sides and angles before making a decision? And then realize everything is gray? Have you been told that this behavior is the mark of reason and intelligence? Beware! The Creator does not praise intelligent people, just obedient ones.
10:07 pm edt

Intelligent or Obedient?
Which is better, intelligence or obedience?  I would suspect the vast majority would say intelligence is better because greater intelligence leads to improvement and greater freedom.  And yet our Creator clearly values obedience over intelligence.  There is growing external evidence that nature was designed.  Shouldn't we choose based on how we were designed?

I can take it
In Pslam 16, David remarked that with the Lord at his right hand he would never be shaken.  History shows David was "shaken" many times by war, betrayal, and even a crazy boss, King Saul.  So how can he truthfully say he was never shaken? David can take it because his roots are in heaven so no matter how much the wind blows on earth, you can't move him from his foundation.

It's easy to get stuck in a rut.  You really don't have to do anything.  It just seems to happen.  One day you wake up and realize your stuck.  But are you really?  After 500 years, Afghans are free to vote for a leader.  Was it a long rut or a short bump in the Eternal Plan?

Nothing New Under the Sun
At Kristy's funeral today, one of the scriptures was Jeremiah 29, God's message to Israel in captivity. He says in verses 4 - 7,  "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their produce. 'Take wives and become the fathers of sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there and do not decrease. Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.'

A good paraphase of this message is go about your daily life.  Why such simple instructions?  Because it is in our daily life that we find God and honor Him, not on some desolate mountain top.  So get on with your daily life and find God where you least expect Him because He has an awesome promise for those who do -- 'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. 'Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 'You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 'I will be found by you,' declares the LORD, 'and I will restore your fortunes... Jeremiah 29:11-14.

Quiz
I was helping my son prepare for an American History test last night.  Some of the questions were ones we should know by heart. To whom was the Declaration of Independence addressed?  What authority did the writers claim in declaring independence?

Not sure?  Look in past entries on this blog for the answers.

Daddy
As I was leaving the house this morning, my little ones were playing on the sofa in a fort they had made with cushions, pillows and blankets.  The younger one gave me a kiss goodbye first, then I leaned over to kiss the older one.  She quickly kissed me and went back to working on the fort.  About 2 seconds later, she realized it was me and squealed with delight and jumped up knocking down part of the fort.

Aren't we that way with our Father in Heaven?  So intent on things that are temporary, we miss the joy of a loving relationship.  When was the last time you squealed with delight at being in God's presence?  Knock down your "fort" today.

Live It
The Sunday before our National Press Conference, the pastor at Kiokee Baptist Church announced our upcoming event.  Although many planned to come, rain and other conflicts greatly reduced the crowd.  At times I wondered if Ten For US was my idea or God's.  We have a fantastic looking logo, attractive products at a good price and a solid message.  Why weren't things going faster?  In faith, I sent a check to Mercy Ministries, our faith partner.  The next day I made a sale to cover the check.

Tonight the pastor told me he had received an e-mail from a gentleman in the church.  The man mentioned that he is frequently asked to purchase things for fundraisers from kids.  Since the announcement his policy has been to ask the kid to recite at least 4 of the Ten Commandments.  If they can't do it he doesn't buy and politely tells them to go learn them.  If they can recite at least four commandments, he purchases some of the items.  When the items come in, the man gives them back to the kid and tells him to give it to someone who needs it.  WOW!  Shouldn't we all be doing this?

To Die is Gain, To Live is Christ..
Yesterday evening a bittersweet event occured.  Kristy lost her battle with cancer and left us here on earth.  That is bitter.  What is sweet...She is in Heaven, cancer free, waiting for family and friends to join her in a place so magnificent that we can't even imagine.  So, we mourn our loss and celebrate Christ's gain.  God Bless you with many crowns Kristy.  You are one of the most inspiring people I have ever known.

A Rightous Man Hates Lying
At Bible study today, there was some discussion about the disgust or disdain that appeared on President Bush's face while Kerry was talking during the first debate.  Perhaps Bush simply was tired and ready to go home after a long day in the sun working with hurricane victims. Or, perhaps Proverbs 13 verse 5, A rightous man hates lying was kicking in. If I were Kerry I would be more concerned about this verse than about Bush.  The rest of the verse is But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.
